FUTURE YOU SUCKS TOO             by Chuck Kelley

Where did we come up with the idea that we will somehow morph into a magnificent, all knowing, doing and achieving machine? A perfect, well heeled, disciplined, principled, and totally together you…just like the One we’ve all, individually, been waiting for, that’ll magically and effortless appear and make all of the troubles go away? Like Santa, the Tooth Fairy and all the other bigger than life characters we never actually got to lay eyes on, this particular breed of the Future You is just more childhood fantasy…or should I say, childish fantasy? We haven’t crossed over yet…we’re still stuck at seven years of age. This particular breed of the Future You sounds very much how we believed grownups to be back when we were very young…back when we became infected with the Instant Gratification Virus.

As children we Want! We want what we want and we want it NOW! Most of us got what we wanted or something similar much more often than we didn’t. We wanted to play, have fun, show off, be seen, and do kid stuff, not grownup yucky stuff. Ok, some of us were already hiding back then and that was childish too…I did my fair share of hiding. I was the perfect example of both. My parents didn’t approve of a slew of the kid stuff I wanted to do, so I hid and did it anyway! And I did it a slew of the time, too. I’d do just about anything to get to do what I wanted to do, damn the consequences. I was deathly infected with The Instant Gratification Virus…it surged through my body and made my head feel funny. It still does. Do you have that? I bet you do.

There are some who never or seldom got any wants met…and it may be them that are the most infected of all of us…

Being stuck at seven, our appetite is voracious…the Instant Gratification Virus makes us feel starved…there is no getting enough. Grownups thought that they can starve the Virus out of us by making us do stuff we didn’t want to do. They still do it to us all the time and that won’t do! We are adults and we will have our wants NOW, thank you very much! And if we can’t have what we really want then we’ll take something that will make us feel good, or better, NOW, instead…like a Lollipop to soothe a skinned knee. Except it’s become harder and harder to find what will soothe that knee and the expense is massive.

That’s the problem.

Our wants control us. They own us. We have become their slaves. We were having enough trouble on our own…and then the advertisers, marketers and manufacturers figured us out! Now they play to our weaknesses, our need to feel better now…so, all we have to do is make this one purchase, or do this one thing… and it’ll be all better.

It’s no longer just those guys…it seems that everyone has caught on….so much so that we can now customize our life, our own reality. Santa finally showed up!

To be continued…

Since his early teens, Chuck Kelley has tried to understand what makes us tick. Having had a troubled youth, he sought anything and everything that might assist him in getting his life together. Feeling universally misunderstood, he was determined to understand our nature and find some peace in his heart. Wanting to fit in while believing that he was totally unacceptable, he spent the majority of his life trying to become who and what he was not. The successes in business, the restaurants, the food manufacturing companies and all the other businesses he owned and operated, meant little to nothing to him because his accomplishments felt small when compared to certain others'. He felt that he was cursed to living a life of not being enough. Over the past forty plus years, Chuck has read practically every self help book, taken practically every self help course and tried an equal amount of self help programs. Along the way he has become certified in practically everything that hints of personal development, such as; Life Coaching, Neuro-Linguistic Programming and Hypnosis. In short, he is a walking, talking self-help clearinghouse. Now, he shares the things that work universally and he leaves out the rest. Having discovered that perfection is unattainable, and acceptance is subjective, he continues his research into every field that may lend insights into how to be more comfortable in our own skin and thrive in life. Embracing and openly admitting his perfectly perfect imperfections, "Because that's how I roll", has brought him more freedom than a massive trust fund. His wish is to save others the time, trouble and the wear and tear.
